this is something English-speaking people...Hi Bill!<br />this is something English-speaking people have to deal with all the time here in the Netherlands. Since I decided to make Holland my home, I resolved to learn the language. I speak Dutch quite well and always speak it when I'm outside the home. Invariably, upon hearing my accent, someone will start speaking to me in English. Now, this doesn't bother me too much because, let's face it, it's much easier for me to express myself in English. If Dutch people want to practice their English, fine with me. Others are as offended as your gentleman in the elevator. They also want to improve their Dutch and don't appreciate being thought of as not willing or able to learn the local language. This issue continues to fascinate me.
